Developing story. Evidence last checked October 2, 2026, at 12:29 a.m. PDT (Vancouver). Anthropic has not confirmed a Fable 5.5 release in the official sources reviewed. Changes to this report are recorded in the update log.
Some Claude users say they are getting a newer model while selecting Fable 5.1. They have shared screenshots, animations and a voxel world, attributing the results to an unreleased Fable 5.5. The posts establish that people are making the claim; they do not establish which model generated the outputs.
As of this check, Anthropic's model directory and Claude Code supported-model list still identify Fable 5.1 as the current Fable. Neither lists Fable 5.5. No confirmed Fable 5.5 model identifier, specifications, pricing or benchmark results were found in the official sources reviewed.
Private testing remains possible. The available evidence does not confirm that it is happening, who has access, or whether “Fable 5.5” would be the model's name.
What Anthropic has confirmed
Anthropic has released two models bearing the 5.5 version number. Its app release notes record Opus 5.5 on September 22 and Sonnet 5.5 on September 28. Those are separate model releases and do not confirm a Fable 5.5 launch.
The latest entry in the API release notes, dated September 30, concerns Sonnet 4.5's deprecation. Neither those notes nor the app notes include a Fable 5.5 release at the time of this review.
That leaves the public position unchanged: Fable 5.1 is documented; the proposed Fable 5.5 rollout is unverified.
Where the hidden-routing rumor comes from
The reports have a traceable history, but each stops short of verifying the backend.
On September 10, Salio claimed a fresh Fable pretraining run could arrive in late September or early October. The post supplied no technical report or named source. This remains an unverified prediction, including the proposed timing.
On September 18, JAZII described a newer backend as “Fable 5.2” and suggested asking Claude about “Tibo the reset guy” without web search. The accompanying image compared visual outputs. It did not identify the model that served either request.
On October 1, Chetaslua reported routing on Claude's website, while Tak reported it in Claude Code. Their screenshots retain the Fable 5.1 label. Recognition of the same nickname is central to their claims.
These are original user reports, not Anthropic announcements. They do not establish a rollout cohort, a release date or a new model ID.
Why the recall test cannot identify Fable 5.5
Recognizing a nickname, giving a different answer or producing a better animation is insufficient to identify model weights. A model's own statement about its name or knowledge cutoff is also insufficient. This is our assessment of the evidence: the posts lack independently verifiable information connecting the requests to a new backend.
Anthropic's model ID and versioning documentation provides a useful distinction. API IDs from the 4.6 generation onward identify fixed snapshots. Updated weights receive a new ID; Anthropic says it does not update the weights or configuration of an existing ID.
The serving infrastructure around a model can change. Anthropic names request routing, safety classifiers and sampling logic as examples, and says infrastructure changes can produce differences in observable behavior without changing the weights.
That policy concerns API model IDs. It does not settle what Claude's apps might privately test. A claim that requests to the public Fable 5.1 API are secretly serving Fable 5.5 would need evidence beyond these screenshots and recall tests.
Specifications: Fable 5.5 remains unknown
No verified Fable 5.5 context window, output limit, price, parameter count, architecture, knowledge cutoff or benchmark score was established in this review. Figures for Fable 5.1 should not be presented as Fable 5.5 specifications.
For reference, Anthropic's published model comparison lists the following for Fable 5.1:
| Specification | Confirmed Fable 5.1 value |
|---|---|
| API model ID | claude-fable-5-1 |
| Context window | 1 million tokens |
| Maximum output | 128,000 tokens |
| Standard input / output price | US$10 / US$50 per million tokens |
| Input / output modalities | Text and images / text |
| Reliable knowledge cutoff | June 2026 |
| Thinking | Adaptive, always on |
These are provider-published Fable 5.1 specifications, not an independent performance measurement or a forecast for its successor.
The circulating demos
Four examples show what users are sharing. Their Fable 5.5 attribution is unverified.
- Tak's animated X-ray scene, reportedly produced in about 15 minutes after a simple animation request.
- Tak's cartoon about a dot, accompanied by a stated prompt.
- A voxel floating-island world, whose poster attributes it to automatic routing without verifying the backend.
- Chetaslua's animated short, The Grader, lasting about 3 minutes 40 seconds and posted October 1. The author attributes it to Fable 5.5 and says the workflow used code, Blender and an ElevenLabs API. The visible post provides no verifiable backend model ID or generation record.
These are user-posted outputs. We have not reproduced them in a matched test or verified a Fable 5.5 backend. None of the reviewed posts supplied verifiable server metadata establishing that Fable 5.5 generated the result. The examples therefore cannot support a measured comparison with Fable 5.1 or another model.
What would change this report
This report is scheduled for source checks every four hours for 14 days, through October 15, 2026. An Anthropic announcement, a documented model ID, an official availability page or independently corroborated records identifying a new backend would materially change the evidence. During that period, we will add confirmed access details, specifications, prices and evaluations as they become available, with links to their sources.
New user reports will retain their attribution and uncertainty. If the proposed name changes, a report is withdrawn or an earlier claim is disproved, the relevant passage and update log will say so. The original reporting dates will remain visible.
Update log
- October 1, 2026, 8:14 p.m. PDT — Initial evidence review: Checked Anthropic's model directory, API and app release notes, Claude Code model configuration and API versioning policy. Fable 5.5 remains unconfirmed. Added the rumor history, three user-posted demos and a clearly labeled Fable 5.1 specification table.
- October 2, 2026, 12:29 a.m. PDT — New user demo: Added Chetaslua's longer animation after inspecting the original post and part of its video. Its Fable 5.5 attribution and reported Blender/ElevenLabs workflow remain unverified. Rechecked Anthropic's newsroom, model directory, release notes and versioning documentation; found no official Fable 5.5 release or specification changes.
