Mistral Unveils Pixtral Large and Enhances Le Chat: A New Era in Multimodal AI

On November 18, 2024, Mistral announced Pixtral Large and a Le Chat beta update. This article records that artificial intelligence launch; the model and service have since changed.

Pixtral Large: the November 2024 model

Pixtral Large combined a 123-billion-parameter text decoder with a one-billion-parameter vision encoder. Built on Mistral Large 2, the 124-billion-parameter model accepted text and images for document, chart and image understanding.

The launch announcement specified a 128K-token context window accommodating at least 30 high-resolution images. Update checked October 5, 2026 UTC: Mistral now marks Pixtral Large deprecated and no longer maintained. Its model documentation dates deprecation to February 27, 2026 and recommends Mistral Medium 3.5 for new integrations.

Mistral reported results on MathVista, DocVQA and VQAv2. These were vendor evaluations against named 2024 model versions, not a current ranking or a Kingy hands-on comparison.

Mistral Pixtral Large

The weights were published on Hugging Face under the Mistral Research License. Its restrictions cover the model, derivatives and outputs, permitting defined noncommercial, nonprofit research purposes. Commercial experimentation and production require separate permission; the launch offered a commercial license. Downloadable weights do not establish unrestricted commercial rights.

Le Chat’s November 2024 beta

Mistral announced the following free beta features, with gradual rollout over the following weeks. Document understanding used Pixtral Large alongside an experimental model.

Features announced at launch

  1. Web search: Internet search with citations. Check the cited pages before relying on an answer.
  2. Canvas: A workspace for editing documents, presentations, code and mockups alongside the conversation, with draft versions and previews.
  3. Document analysis: PDF and image analysis and summarization, including graphs, tables and equations.
  4. Image generation: Black Forest Labs’ Flux Pro integration.
  5. Agents: Reusable prompt workflows that could be published and shared, with vendor examples including meeting summaries, receipt scanning and invoice processing. These examples do not establish reliable unattended execution.

The free-beta description belongs to November 2024. Mistral’s current help page says Le Chat has become Vibe, using the same URL and login. Its plans page, checked October 5, 2026 UTC, lists limited free messages, web searches and coding sessions, with greater allowances on paid plans.

Choosing a model today

Parameter counts alone do not tell you which model will handle your documents well. If comparing Mistral with Meta AI or another assistant, use the same material and check the answers against it.

Start with a document whose answer you already know. Ask for the exact supporting passage or table cell, then check it manually. Repeat with a chart, a scanned page and a question the document cannot answer.

For deployment, separate three decisions: the model version you can access, the license for your use, and the service plan’s limits. A historical launch announcement cannot settle all three.
