Alexa Can Now Answer a Very Important Question: “Is This Actually Amazon?”
Impersonation scams work because they create doubt and urgency at the same time.
Your package supposedly failed to arrive. Your Prime membership allegedly expired. Your account needs immediate verification. There’s a suspicious charge. Someone needs your one-time password.
Cue panic.
The new Alexa for Shopping communication-verification feature tries to remove that uncertainty.
U.S. customers can provide Alexa for Shopping with details about an email, text message, phone call, or other communication claiming to come from the retailer. Alexa then determines whether the communication matches something the company actually sent.
According to Amazon, around 360,000 customers contact its customer service operation every year simply to ask whether a message supposedly from the company is legitimate.
That’s a surprisingly large number of people essentially asking the same question:
“Hey Amazon, was this you?”
Now Alexa can answer.
And importantly, the assistant doesn’t rely entirely on whether an email merely looks suspicious.
It has something ordinary scam-detection tools don’t have: Amazon’s own records.
The Clever Part Is What Alexa Checks Behind the Scenes
A generic phishing detector can inspect an email for warning signs.
Maybe the sender looks strange. Maybe the grammar is terrible. Maybe there’s a suspicious URL demanding that you “VERIFY ACCOUNT IMMEDIATELY!!!”
Those clues help.
But Alexa for Shopping has another advantage.
Amazon says the system compares the information supplied by the customer against its record of communications sent by the company. It analyzes details including the sender, message content, timing, and formatting.

And Amazon repeatedly reminds customers of a simple rule: the company won’t call asking for passwords, one-time passcodes, or other sensitive information.
That may sound obvious.
Unfortunately, scammers wouldn’t keep trying these tricks if nobody fell for them.
