FDA approves the first direct muscle-targeted add-on therapy for spinal muscular atrophy

Why it matters
Existing disease-modifying SMA therapies increase survival motor neuron protein. Apitegromab is the first approval to complement them by directly inhibiting latent myostatin in muscle.
Limits
It is an add-on, not a cure or replacement for SMN-directed therapy. The mean gain was modest, the pivotal primary population was non-ambulatory children aged 2–12, and longer-term functional durability remains uncertain.
