Breakthrough Tracker record
A scaffolded DNA computer runs programmable calculations at equilibrium
Stérin and collaborators demonstrated a programmable DNA computer whose intended products are favoured at thermodynamic equilibrium. Ten programs and more than 700 experimental computations included 25-bit addition, a 100-bit molecular computation.

Why it matters
The architecture encodes computation into an energy landscape rather than relying only on staged kinetic reactions, showing that useful molecular calculations can reliably settle toward their answer and be cycled again.
Limits
This is a laboratory proof of principle, not an electronic-computer replacement. Synthesis, thermal cycling and runtimes up to about 14 hours are real costs; no end-to-end energy advantage was established, and patent-related interests are disclosed.
