Norellraptor supports convergent assembly of flight-related anatomy

Wang and collaborators describe Norellraptor barsboldi and infer that microraptorines and early birds acquired a similar flight apparatus through different evolutionary sequences, supporting convergence rather than inheritance of one fully assembled package.

Why it matters

The unusually complete fossil provides a stronger basis for separating convergence from shared inheritance and complicates linear accounts of how the avian flight package accumulated.

Limits

The inference rests on one fossil and model-dependent anatomical coding and phylogeny. Flight-related anatomy and plumage do not by themselves demonstrate sustained powered flight, multiple origins of modern birds or repeated evolution of every flight component.
