Breakthrough Tracker record
Bianfu Cave fossils and artefacts expand the Denisovan body and behavioural record
Two coordinated Nature studies identify five Denisovan fossils from Bianfu Cave in southwestern China, including the first attributed radius from the group, and reconstruct a roughly 190,000-to-70,000-year cultural sequence with specialized hunting, stone tools and bone-tool use.

Why it matters
Bianfu is now the richest molecularly identified Denisovan site outside Siberia, fills a major southwest-China geographic gap and adds rare postcranial evidence alongside an unusually long associated cultural record.
Limits
The five fossil assignments rest primarily on palaeoproteomic markers rather than recovered ancient DNA. The broader 190,000-to-70,000-year cultural sequence is attributed parsimoniously to Denisovans but does not prove that every artefact or occupation layer was made by the same population.
