Historical clarification, October 4, 2026. On November 5, 2024, the UK government announced an experimental GOV.UK Chat trial for up to 15,000 business users. The planned rollout used selected business pages and a waiting list. The original Guardian coverage remains linked below.

GDS described a question-answering service using GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini to find relevant GOV.UK guidance and generate responses with source links. The documented workflow finds guidance; these announcements do not describe filing returns or submitting permit applications. Users could check the linked guidance rather than assume an answer was correct.
The earlier feedback came from hundreds of invited users in late 2023: nearly 70% found responses useful, while just under 65% were satisfied with the experience. GDS said accuracy still fell short of GOV.UK’s required standard. Those results were not outcomes of the newly announced November 2024 pilot.
For the 2024 pilot, GDS described answer checking, monitoring and guardrails, while warning that inaccurate or inappropriate responses remained possible. It said no personal data was required and trial users should exclude it from questions. The team planned to use pilot feedback to decide what to test next.
