Feature-path buying guide
Choose an AI phone by the exact feature you need, the device and software that officially support it, and where the request is processed—not by an “AI phone” label.
Start with the feature, not the handset
Define the job
Name the exact task: call translation, transcription, assistant actions, visual search, summarization, image editing, generation, accessibility, or a third-party model. “Has AI” is not a testable requirement.
Freeze the support tuple
Record device model, storage configuration, OS build, app and version, account type, region, device language, assistant language, subscription, network state, and any paired accessory.
Trace execution
Classify each feature as on-device, vendor private cloud, ordinary vendor cloud, third-party cloud, or a mixed path. Do not infer the path from a processor name or an offline demo of a different feature.
Test the failure mode
Repeat the workflow without Wi-Fi, without cellular data, after sign-out, with the intended language, and with cloud permissions restricted. Record what stops and what remains local.

Do not collapse every cloud path into one label
An on-device language pack may handle one translation mode while an assistant query, connected-app action, or image-generation request leaves the phone. A vendor-operated privacy architecture is still a remote execution path, and a third-party integration can introduce separate terms, retention, region, and account requirements.
Practical check: for each must-have feature, write one sentence that begins “The phone sends…” and another that begins “The phone stores…”. If official documentation cannot complete those sentences, mark the data path not verified rather than calling it private or local.

Buy the support horizon with the feature
Record the date from which the vendor counts OS and security support, the carrier’s role, the remaining warranty, repair options, storage headroom for downloaded models, and whether a feature is tied to a subscription or account policy. Google currently states that Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates from first U.S. Google Store availability; that is a Pixel policy, not a promise for every Android phone or every AI feature.
A long OS-support window does not guarantee that a later model, language, or cloud feature will reach an older device. Separate security and OS maintenance from feature entitlement, model availability, app support, and cloud-service continuation.
Acceptance gates before the return window closes
Identity and entitlement
The delivered model, region code, storage, OS build, account type, language, subscription, and carrier state match the approved tuple.
Functional and route
Every required feature appears, produces an acceptable result on representative input, and follows the documented on-device or remote route under normal and disconnected tests.
Lifecycle and recovery
Update policy, backup, export, account recovery, repair, reset, resale, and end-of-service handling meet the intended ownership period.
Ordinary phone quality
Independently evaluate camera, display, modem, battery, ergonomics, repairability, and thermal behavior using a documented test source or your own repeatable trial. AI support does not settle those questions.
