OpenAI Plan Calculator – What Plan Should I Get?

ChatGPT Plan Recommendation Calculator

Find a sensible starting plan for your models, tools, usage, and privacy needs.

September 27 buying update: OpenAI has paused new Pro $200 sign-ups and upgrades. Pro $100 remains available. This calculator now recommends among plans available to a new buyer; existing $200 subscribers continue to renew, and eligible former subscribers may have a one-time return option.

Find the ChatGPT Plan You Actually Need (Without Overpaying)

OpenAI describes many limits as “limited,” “expanded,” or “maximum.” Those labels do not tell you how much of a particular tool your account can use. This calculator uses current plan details as a starting point; check your model picker and usage screens before paying for more capacity.

This independent calculator asks six questions and suggests a starting plan. It is not affiliated with OpenAI, and it cannot know your account-specific limits or guarantee that a plan covers every workload.

The important decisions are model access, tool limits, team controls and what is actually available to buy.

The Choices and Their Prices

As of September 2026, the choices are Free, Go (about $8/month in the US), Plus ($20/month), Pro $100 ($100/month), Business Standard ($25 per seat monthly or $20 annually), Business Premium ($125 per seat monthly or $100 annually), and Enterprise (custom pricing). Business requires at least two paid seats. The Pro $200 tier still exists for current subscribers, but new sign-ups and upgrades are paused. Prices may vary by region and tax.

The two personal Pro tiers have the same core capabilities: Pro $100 offers 5x Plus usage and Pro $200 offers 20x, with separate limits for some models. Business is a different buying decision: it adds a managed workspace and default no-training protection, and its Standard and Premium seats can be mixed. OpenAI’s Business FAQ explains the current seat rules.

The useful question is which specific capability or limit you need next. Paying more for everyday text chat alone rarely answers it.

What the Calculator Actually Asks (and Why It Matters)

The tool walks you through six questions. Each one targets a specific dimension of how ChatGPT plans differ from each other. Here’s what they are and why they’re important.

How Many People Need Access?

A personal plan can fit one person. Business starts at two paid seats and supports up to 200 paid seats in new workspaces; larger deployments should discuss Enterprise with OpenAI. Business offers shared administration and no training on workspace data by default. A solo user who needs that default must account for the two-seat minimum, or decide whether the personal-plan training opt-out meets their policy.

How Heavily Do You Use It?

Free and Go offer unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse safeguards, while uploads, images, voice and other tools have separate limits. Plus expands model and tool access; Pro $100 adds more capacity and GPT-6 Pro in Chat, but even Pro models have specific allowances. Choose from observed usage and the limits shown in your account, not a guess about how many hours you chat.

Which Models Do You Need?

Free and Go use GPT-5.6 Luna for everyday ChatGPT; Go’s Think option also uses Luna. Plus includes GPT-5.6 Sol reasoning in Chat and GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, but GPT-6 Pro in Chat requires Pro, Business or Enterprise. Pro $100 includes GPT-6 Pro in Chat with a separate usage allowance. OpenAI’s model guide lists current access and limits.

Which Advanced Tools Do You Actually Use?

Tool access has more overlap than the plan names suggest. Free already offers limited images, voice, deep research, data analysis and Codex. Go raises eligible limits for uploads, images and data analysis, and offers projects and some builder features subject to availability. Plus is the clearer step up for expanded Codex and deep research, scheduled tasks and creating custom GPTs. Selecting a tool here means you expect to use it regularly, not simply try it once.

How Sensitive Is Your Data?

Personal Free, Go, Plus and Pro workspaces offer an opt-out for using new conversations to train models. Business and Enterprise workspace data is not used for training by default. If you handle client or regulated data, check the relevant terms and controls rather than treating this quiz as a compliance determination.

How Do You Feel About Ads?

Ads may appear on Free and Go in select regions. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise do not show ads. OpenAI also offers an ads-free Free option in eligible settings with reduced message limits, so “must be ad-free” does not always require a paid plan. See the current ads FAQ.

What About API Access?

ChatGPT subscriptions and OpenAI API usage are billed separately, including for Business. Every quiz result flags this separate cost. If your workflow calls the API, budget for it in addition to a ChatGPT plan.

How the Recommendation Engine Works

The calculator first separates personal plans from managed workspaces, then uses your model needs, tool use and stated usage to suggest a starting tier. A team does not need Enterprise solely because it has more than 20 people; new Business workspaces support up to 200 paid seats.

The result shows what the suggested plan includes, its meaningful limits, a cheaper option to compare, and a reason to upgrade later. Every result also flags separate API billing.

Treat the recommendation as a shortlist. Verify the plan in your region, available models in your picker and any tool limits that matter to your work.

The Trade-offs Worth Understanding

A few insights that come up repeatedly in recommendations and are worth internalizing:

For a solo buyer who needs GPT-5.6 Sol reasoning in Chat, more Codex or deep research, or a paid ad-free tier, Plus is the usual step. Go can be enough when you mainly want more image, upload or data-analysis use than Free.

Pro $100 adds GPT-6 Pro in Chat and higher usage for $100/month, though that model is not unlimited. New Pro $200 purchases and upgrades remain paused; existing subscribers and some eligible former subscribers have separate rules. Compare the available options in our Pro vs Claude Max buying guide.

Pro is built for an individual who needs more model and tool capacity. Business is a managed workspace with Standard and Premium seat options, central administration and no training on workspace data by default. Compare those needs separately.

At about $8/month in the US, Go is worth trying if Free’s eligible tool limits are too tight and you do not need GPT-5.6 Sol in Chat. Go voice has the same usage limit as Free, and ads may appear in select regions.

A Quick Note on Accuracy

The calculator’s plan and model assumptions were checked against OpenAI’s pricing page, model guide, Business FAQ and Pro-tier notice on September 27, 2026. OpenAI changes access and limits by plan, account and rollout. Confirm the checkout price and in-product model picker before subscribing.

It’s also worth noting that some of the plan descriptions use intentionally vague language because that’s what OpenAI publishes. When OpenAI says a plan offers “expanded” access versus “limited” access without providing exact message caps, there’s only so much precision any third-party tool can offer. The calculator works with the best available information and is transparent about where the ambiguity lives.

Now go find out which plan you actually need. It might be cheaper than you think.
