Open with a warning and a promise: agents are exciting because they can do multiple steps, but that is exactly why beginners need boundaries. The safest first agent prepares work for a human instead of acting alone.
Define an agent plainly. An agent can gather information, make a decision, use tools, and produce an output across steps. That does not mean it should be allowed to email customers, move money, change accounts, or update a database without review.
Give safe first examples. A research brief agent summarizes sources. A meeting prep agent creates questions. A QA checklist agent reviews a page. A content repurposing agent turns a transcript into drafts. These are useful because they prepare decisions instead of taking irreversible actions.
Give risky examples. Payment workflows, legal or financial claims, medical advice, account actions, mass outbound emails, and private data handling require human approval and often expert review.
Walk through an agent spec. Name the task, input, allowed sources, allowed tools, forbidden actions, evidence requirements, approval points, logging needs, and fallback behavior.
Show test cases. Use fake data first. Test missing information, conflicting information, and a request the agent should refuse. If the agent cannot explain what it did and where the information came from, it is not ready.
Explain the handoff. The agent can draft the email, but a human approves before sending. The agent can recommend a database update, but a human confirms before writing. The agent can summarize a claim, but it should show sources and uncertainty.
Add a visible approval checkpoint. Put three columns on screen: agent can prepare, human must approve, system may execute. Fill it with examples so viewers see the difference between drafting a response, sending that response, and updating a customer record.
Give the audience a starter prompt. Ask AI to write an agent spec for one internal workflow, include forbidden actions, include fake-data test cases, and include a sentence that says what the agent should do when confidence is low. That turns agent excitement into an inspectable plan.
