Lesson 6: Pricing, Access, Licensing, and Availability

Lesson 6 of 12

Pricing, Access, Licensing, and Availability

A launch is not useful until people understand whether they can access it, what it costs, and what they are allowed to do with it.

Access models to recognize

Availability decides whether a launch can be tested now or only watched. Be precise.

  • Free plan
  • Free trial
  • Paid plan
  • Usage-based pricing
  • API pricing
  • Credits
  • Rate limits
  • Waitlist
  • Invite-only access
  • Beta access
  • Open-source
  • Open-weight
  • Commercial license
  • Personal-use license
  • Enterprise plan
  • Local deployment
  • Cloud-only tools

Important distinctions

A free plan is ongoing limited access. A free trial is temporary. Open-source means code license matters. Open-weight means model weights may be available but the code, license, or commercial rights can still be limited. API available means builders can integrate; product only means users interact through the app.

Buyer and creator impact

Buyers need cost, risk, and availability. Creators need test access and demo permission. Founders need to make these obvious or serious evaluators move on.

Kingy Tip: Do not call something free unless you know whether it is a plan, a trial, a credit grant, an open license, or a temporary launch offer.
Red Flag: No pricing and no access path is not buyer-ready, even if the demo looks impressive.

Try this

Exercise

Evaluate the access model for five launches. Mark each as live, waitlist, beta, API, open-weight, open-source, trial, paid, unclear, or enterprise-only.

Access and Pricing Clarity Table

Short quiz

Check your judgment

Is open-weight the same as open-source?
Readable answer

No. Open-weight usually refers to model weights. Open-source refers to code license. Both require license review.

Why does waitlist-only matter?
Readable answer

It limits immediate testing and makes the verdict more speculative.

What should you write when pricing is missing?
Readable answer

Write unclear, not published, waitlist-only, sales-led, or unknown. Do not guess.

Choose an answer for each question, then check your score.

Do this now

Pick five launches and add one access verdict for each.
