The realm of artificial intelligence is expanding at an unprecedented pace. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are at the heart of this growth, but they demand immense computational power. Traditional electronic hardware is straining under this load. Enter photonic processors—a groundbreaking technology using light to perform computations, promising ultrafast speeds and extreme energy efficiency.

The Challenge with Traditional Hardware

Deep neural networks are intricate webs of interconnected layers. Each layer processes data, transforming it before passing it on. The core operation here is matrix multiplication, a linear algebra computation that’s computationally intensive. Traditional electronic chips handle these tasks but at the cost of speed and energy efficiency.

Moreover, DNNs rely not just on linear operations but also on nonlinear ones. These nonlinear operations, like activation functions, enable the network to learn complex patterns. However, implementing these on electronic hardware adds another layer of complexity and energy consumption.

MIT Photonic processors

Harnessing Light for Computation

Photonic hardware offers a tantalizing solution. By performing computations with light, it sidesteps many limitations of electronic chips. Light travels faster than electrons and doesn’t generate heat in the same way. This means photonic processors can operate at higher speeds without overheating.

In 2017, researchers from MIT made a significant leap. They demonstrated an optical neural network on a single photonic chip capable of performing matrix multiplication using light. But there was a hitch. The device couldn’t perform nonlinear operations on the chip. To achieve this, optical data had to be converted back into electrical signals and processed externally. This conversion negated some of the speed and efficiency benefits.

A Fully Integrated Photonic Neural Network

Building on years of research, scientists from MIT and collaborators have overcome this obstacle. They’ve developed a photonic chip that can perform both linear and nonlinear operations—all optically on the chip.

The key innovation is the introduction of nonlinear optical function units (NOFUs). These units combine electronics and optics to implement nonlinear functions directly on the chip. By siphoning a tiny amount of light to photodiodes, they convert optical signals into electrical currents. This method eliminates the need for external amplifiers and consumes minimal energy.

“We stay in the optical domain the whole time, until the end when we want to read out the answer. This enables us to achieve ultra-low latency,” says Saumil Bandyopadhyay, the lead author of the study.

The researchers built an optical deep neural network using three layers of devices for both linear and nonlinear operations. The system encodes the parameters of a DNN into light. An array of programmable beamsplitters performs the matrix multiplication. Then, the NOFUs implement the nonlinear functions, all within the photonic chip.

Deep Neural Network (DNN)

Implications for the Future

The photonic processor demonstrated remarkable performance. It completed key computations for a machine-learning classification task in less than half a nanosecond. Moreover, it achieved over 92% accuracy, rivaling traditional electronic hardware.

“There are a lot of cases where how well the model performs isn’t the only thing that matters, but also how fast you can get an answer,” notes Bandyopadhyay. This ultra-low latency opens doors for real-time applications like lidar. It is essential for high-speed telecommunications and even contributes to scientific research in astronomy and particle physics.

Furthermore, the chip was fabricated using commercial foundry processes. This means it can be scaled up using existing manufacturing techniques, making widespread adoption more feasible.

Dirk Englund, a senior author of the paper, emphasizes the broader impact: “This work demonstrates that computing—at its essence, the mapping of inputs to outputs—can be compiled onto new architectures of linear and nonlinear physics that enable a fundamentally different scaling law of computation versus effort needed“.

Challenges and Next Steps

While the advancements are significant, there’s more work ahead. Scaling up the device and integrating it with real-world electronics is a primary focus. The researchers are also exploring algorithms that can leverage the advantages of optics to enhance training speed and energy efficiency.

Nonlinearity in optics remains a challenge. Photons don’t interact easily, making it power-consuming to trigger optical nonlinearities. However, the introduction of NOFUs is a promising step toward overcoming this hurdle.

Conclusion

The development of a fully integrated photonic processor marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI computation. By harnessing the power of light, we can achieve speeds and efficiencies previously thought unattainable with traditional electronic hardware. As research progresses, photonic processors could become the backbone of next-generation AI applications. They have the potential to propel us into a new era of technological advancement.
