Hotel desk clerks and AI

Front-desk research documents how current receptionists perceive robot collaboration; measured GenAI transaction reliability and job displacement remain unknown.

What published evidence shows

Hotel desk clerks check guests in and out, assign rooms, handle reservations and payments, and respond to requests and complaints.

Scope: official US hotel desk-clerk description

Wider clerical statistics do not establish hotel-specific AI effects.

A 2025 scenario experiment analyzed a sample of 384 current hotel receptionists through Prolific. Robot functionality and appearance influenced perceived social presence; core functionality also influenced perceived job insecurity. These are reactions to hypothetical robot scenarios.

Scope: online scenario experiment with screened current receptionists

No hotel shift or deployed check-in system was observed.

Perceived insecurity is not observed displacement; the study does not measure GenAI transaction accuracy or staffing effects.

An accessible front-desk GenAI simulation poster describes four students refining scenarios and seven students testing logistics. Feedback changed the design, including replacing an unrealistic fire-alarm scenario. It provides no established employee productivity effect.

Scope: small student simulation-design pilots

Do not transfer student setup and realism feedback to professional front-desk performance.

What remains unknown

Questions for a real workflow

Test reservation changes with explicit inventory and cancellation rules, account verification, payment permissions and escalation paths. Count completed accurate transactions, unauthorized actions, complaint resolution and staff repair effort. Keep sensitive or exceptional requests under the appropriate human authority.
