Accountants and auditors and AI

Accounting has field and experimental evidence of AI assistance, with important limits on causality and generalization.

What published evidence shows

Accountants examine records, evaluate financial risks, prepare taxes and communicate findings. BLS expects routine automation to change the task mix.

Scope: official occupational description and projection

US occupational description; not measured AI task performance.

Employment projections are forecasts, not observed AI displacement.

The study combines 277 accountant surveys, proprietary records for 79 SMEs and a framed account-classification experiment. Field adoption associations coexist with experimental evidence of improved average classification accuracy and errors from following non-consensus advice.

Scope: peer reviewed external multi method study

Field associations do not identify a causal occupation-wide effect.

Single partner platform and bounded account classification; transfer to tax/audit responsibility is unestablished.

Raw proprietary data not available in this package.

Task boundaries

These are reference tasks and proposed evidence links, not verified AI capability ratings.

What remains unknown

Questions for a real workflow

For a local test, hold inputs, accounting policy and account taxonomy fixed. Count reconciliation failures and uncertain classifications, measure correction time and require authorized sign-off before any real transaction or filing.
