The Energy Crisis Nobody Saw Coming

Here’s the thing about AI: it’s hungry. Really hungry.

Training a single frontier AI model now requires gigawatts of power. To put that in perspective, the U.S. AI sector will need at least 50 gigawatts of new capacity over the next several years. That’s enough electricity to power millions of homes.

Data centers consumed about 4.4% of all electricity generated in the U.S. in 2024, according to research by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. But here’s where it gets scary: that number is expected to jump to 12% by 2028.

A later report by Carnegie Mellon University and North Carolina State University painted an even grimmer picture. This demand increase could lead to a 25% increase in consumer electricity costs by 2030.

That’s not a typo. Twenty-five percent.

How Data Centers Drive Up Your Electric Bill

Most people don’t realize how data centers impact their monthly utility bills. It happens in two main ways.

First, connecting these massive facilities to the power grid requires expensive infrastructure upgrades. We’re talking transmission lines, substations, transformers the whole nine yards. Anthropic’s Four-Point Pledge

So what exactly is Anthropic promising?

In a blog post published on February 11, 2026, the company laid out a comprehensive plan to protect consumers. It’s built on four key commitments.

Covering Grid Infrastructure Costs

Anthropic will pay for 100% of the grid upgrades needed to connect its data centers to power grids. This includes transmission lines, substations, and other infrastructure that would normally be funded through rate increases.

“We will pay for 100% of the grid upgrades needed to interconnect our data centers, paid through increases to our monthly electricity charges,” the company stated. “This includes the shares of these costs that would otherwise be passed onto consumers.”

Procuring New Power Sources

The company pledged to bring new electricity generation online to match its data centers’ power needs. Where new generation isn’t yet available, Anthropic will work with utilities and external experts to estimate and cover demand-driven price effects caused by its operations.

This is crucial. It means Anthropic isn’t just tapping into existing power supplies it’s actually adding new capacity to the grid.

Reducing Strain During Peak Hours

Anthropic plans to invest in curtailment systems that will reduce its data centers’ electricity usage during peak demand periods. Think of it as voluntarily dimming the lights when everyone else needs power most.

This could help relieve pressure on power grids during critical moments, like during a heatwave when air conditioners are running full blast or during a winter storm when heating systems are working overtime.

Investing in Local Communities

The company’s current data center projects are projected to create hundreds of permanent jobs and thousands of construction jobs. Anthropic also plans to deploy water-efficient cooling technologies and partner with local leaders to broaden AI benefits to communities.

Following in Big Tech’s Footsteps

The Political Pressure Is Real

These corporate pledges aren’t happening in a vacuum. Politicians on both sides of the aisle are taking action.

Last week, New York senators introduced a bill that would temporarily halt any new permits for data centers in the state. The legislation also calls for a new state commission to examine ways to minimize the impact of data centers on electricity and gas rates.

The bill came after more than 50 groups called for a moratorium in December 2025, citing unsustainable resource use and rising utility costs.

At the federal level, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland and other Democrats proposed legislation in January that would require AI companies to foot the bill for any increases in electricity prices and pay for infrastructure upgrades needed to add capacity to existing grids.

Even the Trump administration is getting involved. The White House appealed directly to electricity providers in the Mid-Atlantic region last month to stop rising electricity costs for consumers. According to Politico, the administration is reportedly drafting a voluntary agreement that would commit AI firms to offset any increases in household electricity costs.

It’s not just Democrats pushing for action. This is a bipartisan issue that’s resonating with voters across the political spectrum.

The $50 Billion Expansion Plan

Anthropic’s pledge comes as the company pursues an aggressive expansion strategy. In November 2025, it shared a $50 billion plan to build data centers in New York and Texas, with more sites to come.

The company didn’t provide details about specific agreements it has inked with energy companies to accomplish its goals. But the scale of the commitment is significant.

For data centers it constructs directly with partners for its own workloads, Anthropic will make these commitments directly. For leased capacity from existing facilities, the company is exploring additional methods to mitigate price impacts from its workloads.

What This Means for the AI Race

The United States is in a race to maintain its competitive edge in artificial intelligence. China and other nations are investing heavily in AI infrastructure, and falling behind could have serious implications for national security and economic competitiveness.

“The country needs to build new data centers quickly in order for it to remain competitive in the AI race,” Anthropic noted in its blog post. “But AI companies shouldn’t leave American ratepayers to pick up the tab.”

It’s a delicate balance. The U.S. needs to expand AI infrastructure rapidly, but not at the expense of ordinary citizens who are already struggling with rising costs of living.

Anthropic’s approach suggests a middle path: aggressive expansion paired with corporate responsibility.

The Broader Energy Challenge

These commitments from AI companies are a good start, but they don’t solve the underlying challenge. The U.S. power grid needs massive upgrades to handle the demands of the 21st century not just from AI, but from electric vehicles, renewable energy integration, and electrification of heating and other systems.

Anthropic supports federal policies aimed at accelerating permitting reform, speeding transmission development, and streamlining grid interconnection. The company argues that such systemic changes are necessary to keep electricity affordable for all users.

“When executed properly, AI infrastructure can act as a catalyst for broader energy investment,” Anthropic stated. The company framed its commitments as “the beginning of its efforts to address data center impacts on energy costs” and promised to share updates as the work develops.

Environmental Considerations

Beyond electricity costs, data centers raise environmental concerns. They consume massive amounts of water for cooling and contribute to carbon emissions if powered by fossil fuels.

Anthropic pledged to address environmental impacts by deploying water-efficient cooling technologies. This is particularly important in regions facing water scarcity, where data centers have sparked controversy over their water usage.

The company also plans to partner with local leaders to ensure AI benefits extend to the communities hosting these facilities. It’s an acknowledgment that data centers can’t just be extractive they need to give back.

The Skeptics Weigh In

Not everyone is convinced these corporate pledges will be enough.

Critics point out that voluntary commitments can be difficult to enforce. What happens if Anthropic or other companies fail to follow through? Who holds them accountable?

There’s also the question of whether these measures will actually keep electricity prices stable. Even with AI companies covering infrastructure costs, the sheer increase in demand could still drive up prices through market mechanisms.
