Fenn Quarry Lantern Route
Route steward field booklet
Crossing and route holds
The crossing marshal remains at the turntable while the route steward moves with the group. Route holds
are entered in the booklet independently of lantern faults. These entries make clear where the group is
waiting and who can release it.
Release authority
The crossing marshal releases a low-light hold. The route steward waits for that release before moving
walkers away from the chalk arch.
Route length
The marked route is 1.8 km long. The length includes the loop around the display turntable.
Lantern return
Returned lanterns go on rack Q5. A lantern with a loose hook is kept beside that rack rather than hung
on it.
Marshal note
The marshal writes the brass leaf token number next to a release entry. The entry is separate from the
walker's names in the route steward's list.
Quiet crossing
The group crosses the turntable in one continuous file. The steward waits until the last walker has
reached the far marker before starting the next count.
Fault handling
A failed lantern is labelled for the rack team. The booklet records the failure's observed point on the
route but does not estimate how long the lantern had been faulty.
